Shiatsu goes back to school at the Littlehampton Academy

Yesterday I went back to school at the Littlehampton Academy.  My sister attended this school back when it was just called the Littlehampton School but for some reason I attended the Angmering School a few miles away.  So it was a bit odd to walk through the gates with my futon over one shoulder to be teacher for an hour or two.

The students were studying the BTEC Sport and Leisure course.  They were interested in seeing how different disciplines viewed and worked with the human body.  Already in this school year they have had a local physiotherapist getting them stretching and moving.

I did a short demonstration of shiatsu on one of the teachers and explained a little about Qi and meridians.  But shiatsu is about doing and not talking and I thought it would be fun if the students could find some acupressure points on themselves.

I gave them coloured sticky dots and took them along the Lung meridian from the chest to the arm.  I read out the location and described the action of the point.  They had to locate the point on themselves and stick the dot on their body.

Finally, the class paired up and after some hilarious crawling around the floor the students got to do some basic shiatsu palming on each other’s backs.  This is the part they really enjoyed.  I think one or two might have nodded of at this point and they were all chilled and enthusiastic when we finished.

I really enjoyed myself and the spirit and energy of the class was great to work in.  Thank you to the Academy for asking me to come along.
